Emily Kirkpatrick with her trophy for 3rd place.

On Sunday 6th July, the Red Sun Squad too part in the Sale Dojo Kata Competition in Manchester. Every member of the Squad did us proud with some excellent performances in front of a packed venue.

The first category was the Under 7's Kata and the Red Sun had five representatives who all performed very well under the pressure of their first ever tournament. The two stand out performers were Ethan Neilson and Emily Kirkpatrick. Emily's excellent Kata performances got her a 3rd place in the very large category and but for a very harsh judging decision, Ethan would also have been in the top three but had to settle for 4th place after narrowly missing out by 3 flags to 2.

The next category was the White to Yellow belt section which was the largest of all the categories. The Red Sun had 3 represntatives in this section who all gave excellent performances. The stand out performance of the category and possibly of the day was Laura Kinsey who gained 1st Place and only dropped one flag throughout the entire rounds. This was a magnificent performance in the largest category.

Due to the high standard of the Ken Yu Kai Kata squad, the Black Belt section was always going to be the hardest section and our representative Jamie McKeeman came up against some very stiff oposition and narrowly lost out by 3 flags to 2 in the first round despite a very good performance of Enpi.

In the Green to Purple/White Belt section, both Charlotte Tait and Jessica Hill put in some excellent Kata performances. Jessica Hill performed the Shotokan compulsory Kata Jion in the semi-final and narowly lost by 3 flags to 2 despite an excellent performance. Charlote Tait also put in an excellent performance of Tekki Shodan to make it to the semi-finals but due to the nerves getting the better of her, a tiny error cost her a place in the final. The joint 3rd places gained by Charlotte and Jessica could easily have been a 1st and 2nd.

Very well done to all members of the squad.

Mr Myagi
Pat Morita, the Actor who was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Ralph Macchio's mentor Mr Miyagi in The Karate Kid, has died.
The 73-year-old died at his home in Las Vegas on Thursday 24th November, 2005 of natural causes, his wife Evelyn said.
Born in California to immigrant fruit pickers, he was among the thousands of Japanese-Americans sent to internment camps during World War II.
Morita, who began his career as a comic, rose to fame in TV's Happy Days.
Sequel appearances
But it was the role in 1984's Karate Kid that would define Morita's career.
The part of a quiet caretaker who takes a bullied teenager under his wing to teach him martial arts was much spoofed in the years that followed.
Morita appeared in the film's three sequels, including 1994's the Next Karate Kid opposite a young Hilary Swank. His other roles included Honeymoon in Vegas, Spy Hard, and Even Cowgirls get the Blues.
