Kata is a form of exercise in the Japanese martial art of Karate-Do. The performance of a sequence of complex Karate techniques in a precise and regulated manner is in order to repulse the imaginary attacks of multiple assailants. They are a method of teaching self defence through the use of Karate but also a way of exercising and developing the body.
The style of Shotokan Karate has some of the most dynamic and powerful Kata in Karate-Do. These Kata are regularly performed at competition plus students must perform them on gradings. The higher the grading, the more complexed the Kata.
Grading is one of the many challenges that a Karate student may face. It is also a means of measuring students' personal ability. Below is a list of the Shotokan grades from Novice to Black belt along with the Kata that the student is required to know when entering that particular examination.

9th Kyu / Orange Belt - Kihon Kata
8th Kyu / Red Belt - Heian Shodan
7th Kyu / Yellow Belt - Heian Nidan
6th Kyu / Green Belt - Heian Sandan
5th Kyu / Purple Belt - Heian Yondan
4th Kyu / Purple/White Belt - Heian Godan
3rd Kyu / Brown Belt - Tekki Shodan
